Lent I:   The Impeded Stream is the One that Sings

March 9, 2022, 7:15 p.m.

Lent is a time to remember the light and the sorrow. Lent is a time to embrace the divinity of ambiguity.

Our hearts are wide enough to do this.

You are invited to join in the ongoing observation of Lent, in chant, prayer, reflection and silence.  Join by Zoom (email evensong@ralphconnor.ca if you don’t have the link) or… join us in person in the Sanctuary.  The side door will be open.

You may wish to bring your journal or paper and pen, and those at home may also wish to have  a candle to light.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do

we have come to our real work,

and that when we no longer know which way to go

we have come to our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings.

                                                                                    Wendell Berry

 Lest we think the blessing

is not in the dirt.

Lest we think the blessing is not in the earth
beneath our feet.

Lest we think the blessing

is not in the dust,

Lest we think the blessing

is not in the spit.

Lest we think the blessing

is not in the mud.

Lest we think the blessing

is not in the mire,
the grime,
the muck.

Lest we think
God cannot reach
deep into the things
of earth,
cannot bring forth
the blessing
that shimmers
within the sludge,
cannot anoint us
with a tender
and grimy grace.
